Welcome to the end! Below I'll share the other significant extra curriculars I have taken part in that have helped me grow crucially as a student and person.
When COVID-19 began and all went downhill, all students including myself went into a repetitive cycle of school, homework, and relaxation. Due to this, I chose to create a club for people like myself who were bored and had a passion for coding. The coding club began during quarantine and while online, we chose to learn SwiftUI; both the apps illustrated on the SwiftUI page were created by a few of my friends in the club. Having the online platform taught me true leadership and collaboration due to which I took the initiative to start the coding club at school. Now, every Wednesday each week, I am joined by a few people to take on new coding-based challenges every week. We've played several coding-based games, explored the computer science behind famous games such as Minecraft, done holiday-themed (Halloween and Christmas) coding challenges, and I have taught Java to the members as well. I plan on doing more fun challenges throughout the school year and continuing the club until I graduate.
Coding/STEM is a passion of mine except I'm not alone in that; my brother shares the same passion. He is always watching me code whether that'd be for school or the coding club. He showed me his interest in coding and I granted his wish. I used his favourite Legos to create a game to gradually teach him the basics of code such as loops and if statements.
Rather than just coding-based activities, I have also done internships throughout the past few summers at two companies that are different yet so similar: Signs Outlet and Perfect Installers and Contractors. Signs Outlet creates signs for very well-known companies and food chains such as Tim Hortons, Booster Juice, and Subway. Working at Signs Outlet was an awesome experience as I had quite a few different roles to take over. I helped design the signs, organize documents, create any required documents, handled the front desk and helped design their website. Working at Signs Outlet and seeing the behind-the-scenes process of everything from the creation of the signs to the publication of the website was an awesome opportunity that has taught me a lot. This was where I first learned the basics of graphic designing as well as web development which has been quite handy. The skills I had learned at Signs Outlet came with me to my next internship which was at Perfect Installers and Contractors. Although this is a construction company, the key principles of the job were quite similar. Here, I applied the knowledge that I had gained from working at Signs Outlet to the job and was one of the main designers. A huge accomplishment for me was that the web designing I had learned from Signs Outlet also came in very handy as I created the Perfect Installers and Contractors website by myself through the experience I had previously gained. Additionally, I also helped organize and create all online documents such as invoices. All in all, these experiences taught me more than anything else I have taken part in so far and have increased my ability to take on challenges individually.ß
